A new age-hardenable, high-carat dental casting Au-Ti alloy(98.3wt% Au-1.7wt% Ti) with better biocompatibility by addition of a small quantity of titanium to gold was recently developed in Europe.

Age-hardening behaviour of this dental casting Au-Ti alloy was investigated by means of hardness test, X-ray diffraction study and scanning electron microscopic observations. The following results were obtained.

The hardening seemed to be attributed to the nucleation of the Au4Ti ordered phase in the supersaturated Au-rich ¥á phase matrix. The overageing with softening occurred following prolonged ageing was due to the precipitation and
coarsening of
the lamellar structure at grain boundaries, which seemed to be composed of the Au-rich ¥á phase and the Au4Ti ordered phase. The dental casting Au-Ti alloy used in the present study is characterized by an introduction of the
Au4Ti
phase with an ordered body-centered tetragonal structure.
